Trolling in the bay's

Post by yepi'mon » Wed Sep 13, 2017 9:06 am

I've just been listening to an episode of the Outdoor and Fishing Show podcast (based from Sydney but a ripper podcast) where they discussed trolling for some of your bread and butter species and it got me thinking... does anyone regularly set out with the plan to troll in PPB and WPB?

I've seen it being done for snapper using down riggers etc... but I'm interested to hear if anyone uses it/had some luck for some of the other species we might find in the bay?

Troll dead slow in about 2.5m in a kayak with berkley flicker minnows for flatties. Small stumpies work well too. Just need something with a lot of action at slow speeds, and match diving depth close to bottom. Probably hard to do with any finesse in a boat.

Do you go out and actively troll/search for them though? Or just wait till you see some action and chuck some metals at them like the average punter?

This is the sort of thing they were talking about in the podcast - more in an estuary situation. Got the electric motor on the boat so slow speed isn't an issue.

Have you had much luck with the above?

i dont but i know few people who do. i personally wait for them to show up and then cast at them. that way i know they are definitely there. i will most definitely try some trolling methods in the coming months.

in the estuary systems, trolling for bream, tailor and flathead are not unheard of. generally a hardbody lure or paddletail is used.

Yep, I'm just curious if someone uses it as a sneaky way to pick up some nice flathead, pinkies etc...

ive heard of it being used in gippy man, it works for sure, cause trolling is banned in bream comps.
i will be trying some sort of down rigging system for pinkies when i get a chance after this snapper season is done and dusted and the pinkies move in during autumn.
