Freshwater advice

Post by Westfish » Tue Jan 27, 2015 1:25 pm

G'Day all.
Having been recently tranferred to the "Mainland" from sunny WA I thought I'd make the best of it and hit up some freshwater action while I'm here.
I did do a recon mission on the weekend where I drove a lazy 650km to have a look at what's on offer. Maybe the Oz day long weekend may not have been the best time to do this as I couldn't squeeze in for a flick at the more "known" haunts.
Now having fished the west for 40 years I thought I was a bit of a guru but have been humbly bought back to earth (with a crash) trying to work out the local scene. I have found myself to be a pleb at best.
I have brought with me a Bream/Bass comp style boat (with Minn Kota) ready to start taumenting the local species. That would be plan A but I also don't mind walking through scrub dressed in waders looking for a place to cast a lure.
Basicaly anything that involves a lure will make me happy.
I'm not after you secret hotspot, just names of places to start researching. If you want to through in access road names and any additional info then that's up to you.
Any and all info will be appreciated.

Like wise, if your heading west and want some info then I'm more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Any preference in what you want to fish for?

From your post i'll guess you don't mind driving a bit.

The estuary scene in far east VIC is fantastic, check out lakes entrance, the Bemm River and Mallacoota.

The freshwater native scene is also excellent if you're willing to head up to the murray or lower goulburn.

PPB and WP on a calmish day will offer you excellent saltwater species as well.

Take your boat to eldion with your lures

Float around the trees/steep banks casting your lures.

You will have success with the natives for sure. ( yellowbelly and cod )

Drive to bonnie doon...just before the bridge there is a boat ramp you can launch from .

Cheers bm

Cheers gents.
I did like the look of Eildon and Bonnydoon but will wait for when things get a bit quieter.
Place looked like a freeway when I saw it. Eppalock was dissapointing, Nillahcootie showed some promise.
Coliban looked great but access was hard to find.
I've had one run out of Werribee the week before Xmas. Please tell me it's not always that busy??
WP is on the list.
Any info on where to start looking around Murry - Goulburn would be awesome.

Very much interested in ticking off the Oz Natives. Not into Carp.
Trout are always a favourite. Pretty much anything that will take a hard body, SP or fly.

Around Nagambie is good for the goulburn.
Mulwala is worth a shot and upstream around bundalong the ovens and murray both fish well for natives.
Most places will have been pretty packed lately.

Most places will ease up now as most are back at work. With this cooler weather I agree with BM and give Bonnie Doon a go

For trout try the more western lakes such as Wendouree, Bullen Merri and Purrumbete, although you might need a downrigger for the second two. Toolondo is a fantastic trout fishery as well.
