Re: Freshwater crays
Sorry guys but I'm a complete begginer when it comes to "fresh water" crays. Are we talking yabbies or like the size of lobsters? What equipment do you need and how do you catch them? Do you have to prep them in any way? Woukd love to know incase I try my hand in the future some time. Cheers! (P.S I know I'm new to the forum, not asking for specific locations or anything just a general "how to")

Re: Freshwater crays
The biggest I've caught. Freshly cooked, he was a blue one from the Yarra ranges before meeting the hot pot. Caught in a drop net with a chunk of raw steak. He weighed just over 800 grams; he was no yabby. If you want to see a real monster though, head to the Poweltown pub, they have a whopper in a glass case there, caught many years ago....

Get yourself a few hoop nets from Aussie disposals. They are 2 for $10. I use chicken necks but skronkman is right, meat will do. They are bigger than yabbies kadmium.
I don't eat them. Just catch them for some fun and relaxation with family and friends. Took the little one out for a quick session on Sunday before a family gathering and we got 2 small ones that went back. Most people would be shocked at how many were in close to suburbia.

With some garlic butter would taste amazing.

Re: Freshwater crays
I've been told the Yarra up around Launching Place has them but I have zero idea if that actually is the case. The guy I was talking to says he got them from private land as a mate owns land adjacent to the river.

Thanks for that mate, Had a feeling that you may have to land them on private land.

I'm sure they're in the publicly accessible sections too, they'd just be overfished so you'd get bugger all.

They are closer than you think....
I live in Hampton park and I've caught a heap, big and small 15 mins from home. I'll try and find some photos
