Jamieson

Post by Sebb » Sat Feb 23, 2019 8:39 pm

Labour Day long weekend is coming. I am planning to go to Jamieson. Staying at the holiday park.

Never been or fished there. Where should I fish? Jamieson river or Goulburn river? And what fish best to target there?
Definitely trout. What about cod/yellowbelly in the river? Or drive up to Eildon.

Haven’t been there for a bit but I reckon the jamieson river would be very low. On the other hand the Goulburn would have plenty going down it. I fished Lake Eildon two weekends ago and only caught carp, roach and a tiny teddy. You might do better.

Both rivers are above the weir at Jamieson and will be at low summer levels. Either will produce trout and redfin on lures or good old reliable worms drifted down the runs. Good luck, Cheers, muzza43.

Yeah sorry, when I was talking about the Goulburn I meant below the weir was very high.

Jamieson and upper Goulburn 10/03/2019.

Water was super low but still cool enough, cloudy/hazy from the nearby bushfire, local said Eildon is around 42% and the dam wall was opened flowing a lot of water down to the lower Goulburn.
Mostly on a foot deep, some of the deepest pools were about a thigh deep, would still hold some trouts I thought but all I saw was carps and some small finger sized fish.

Tried with fly in the morning, hoping to catch trouts but I caught this unknown fish instead. Looks like a greyling but it has bright orange eyes and fins, probably a roach.

Gave up looking for trouts, decided to use the leftover white bread from breakfast as bait for carps. Saw one feeding and off the unweighted bread on small hook with 4 lb line. The carp took it almost instantly. Then pretty much spooked the rest of them.

Oh well, now I learnt that I shouldn't come here in later summer and autumn. The water is waaay low. Even my mate that wished to swim and kayaking was unable to.

The mysterious fish is a roach, I imagine that water temp was the bigger issue than water depth for the trout

Thanks mazman, roach it is then.

Yeah you could be right, i felt the water wasn't that cold but not that warm either. I've fished warmer water in Rubicon and caught trout. Maybe the mix of both water level and water temp pushed the trouts down to lake Eildon.
I got thermometer, forgot to use it.
