2012 Flathead reports
With the water temperature warming up, I am having a lot of success with Soft Plastics on the Flathead.
Landed this one at Brighton Breakwall tonight...went 48cm and took an orange coloured Squidgy shad.
I believe this species to be a Rock Flathead with it's marbled pattern and yellow fins?

Re: 2012 Flathead reports
Sorry.... not a nice picture but this is what I have got after scaling, gutting and wrapping it. This ugly creature was caught at Brighton pier tonight and went around 45cm. BTW I am a lazy fisho so it was hooked on bait.

Diffinetly not a rock flathead. Flathead can change there colours quite a bit depending on there environment it looks like a southern sand or marble flathead.
Nice catch.

Congrats, jealous! I'm new to Melbourne and that's my ambition for this year. Btw you couldn't recommend a 1-3kg 2 piece rod? I'm a fly fisher so still feeling my way round the scene and normally use very light gear.
There is no such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer.

Re: 2012 Flathead reports
here's my booty from St Kilda when I fished with Jon on Monday after work. 55 cm, 45 cm and 32 cm.
Can someone ID the dark flatty? There was no tail marking so I cant be sure if it was a dusky. The spots were like that of a snakehead, almost black but has the shade of blue/dark green on the sides. Belly had orange transition between the white and the dark skin. Skin was tough as a leather! The fish was long and narrow unlike most flatties that are wide in the head and belly area then tapers toward the tail. It was a female.

FC great catch! Did you catch them using soft plastics?

Re: 2012 Flathead reports
Dark flathead looks like a dusky due to the head shape and the green tinge but without seeing it live and the tail I cannot be sure.

Re: 2012 Flathead reports
forgot about the gill spikes. I suspected it was a dusky as the gill spikes were almost of the same length. The tail had no big spot to confirm if it was a dusky - just small dark patches all over. The fishing guide says for mature dusky, the tail marks maybe absent. I was leaning towards dusky but the color made me think otherwise. Thanks for your inputs. Let's call it a dusky. :roflmao:
Strange looking fish. More of a snake head than dusky. Looks like there was a hanky panky a few years back in St Kilda area involving a snakehead and a flatty. :roflmao: :lolf:
Yes, all on SP and on small jig head.
