Alvey Reels Australia Closing Down

Post by Fish-Hunter » Wed Jul 19, 2017 7:10 pm

As an extremely loyal Alvey user & customer, it's with great sadness I post this message by Bruce Alvey. :(

Quote by Alvey Reels Australia's Director & Owner (Bruce Alvey) -

To our wonderful customers over many, many years. It is with great sadness I have to announce that Alvey Reels Australia will be closing down.
Our manufacturing facility at Carole Park has served us well since 1978 but sales of our reels are now so low they can not generate the income required to keep the business going.
Our loyal and skilled staff have kept the quality of our products very high and we are proud of this reputation as being the toughest reel on the market.
So I would like to sincerely thank all our staff, many who are very long term employees for their support even now during this very sad time as we wind the business down.
We still have substantial stocks to be distributed to retailers and we will endeavour to support warranties and spare parts for our products as long as we can.
Thank you again for your support as an Alvey user, it is you that has kept us in business for the past 97 years.
Kindest Regards,
Bruce Alvey

That is really sad to hear. They are an iconic Aussie reel and will be sorely missed

I don't own an Alvey though I saw a couple of old ones at a market in Pakenham on Sunday that I was tempted by.

They were in poor condition unfortunately and I have no skill in refurbishment.
Cheers,
Neil

I seen the news and thought of you first. You seem to use them a bit from your pics you have posted.
What a shame and so close to 100 years.

A sad day for the Australian tackle industry and another nail in the coffin of manufacturing in this country.

In the case of Alvey reels the closure would be due to a design thats no longer modern. Although they are still great in the right applications.

I have purchased many new Alvey's over the years, Bruce Alvey once even admitted, it's bad business practice when the product you manufacture last's a life time & never needs replacing even when used in heavy surf sand & salt water.

What are these type of old school reels called? Haven't seen them in years but started posting here and everyone's using them from bait fishing in rivers, to surf fishing?

What's the advantage to them? They don't look as though they would have a drag system?
