Disappointing two hours spin fishing at Mersylea..
Calm weather conditions this morning saw me heading off to Mersylea for a spin session above Hoggs Bridge. I haven't fished this area for a month or more now so I'm hoping for a good session today. I was in the river around 6:15 am and spotted trout on the rise in most sections of the river. There were thousands of midges in the air as well as on the surface and they were having a ball sipping them down. I knew then it wasn't going to be an easy morning chasing trout. When I crossed the river I noticed that the river was quite clouded and the river bottom was covered in a very thick brown algae, not only that the river had an unusual smell to it. This could be due to heavy irrigation that's going on along the lower Mersey River at the moment, but what ever the cause is it wasn't good.
As usual I started off with the little gold Aglia and fished a nice flowing back water for starters, I did hook into a small brown in pretty quick time. It fell of as I lifted it from the river which didn't bother me as it save me from handling it. After that it was cast and retrieve then pick off brown algae from the spinner that was now being fouled all too often. I kept this up for another thirty minutes before changing to the small ghost brown hard body. Well, that was even worse for fouling up with the algae as it ran a little deeper than the spinner. The only good thing was that I jagged a solid 410 gram rainbow trout just as I was about to lift the lure from the river. The lure was probably around three meters from me when this rainbow came from no where an took it. It didn't take all that long before I had it in the net and then back in the river. I changed back to the gold spinner again and I fished on until 8:20 am before I called it a day, I was sick and tired of the algae fouling the lures constantly. Thankfully that rainbow saved the day for me, it stopped me having my first “donut day” of the trout season. That's not the first time the rainbows have done that in the Mersey for me either..
cheers
Adrian

Great photos, too bad about the weed and fish
Thought you wouldn't need irrigation in Tassie
At least, with those poppies, you could finish on a high
Cheers Gra
