Marlo / Bemm in winter land base

Post by tbcha1 » Wed Jun 27, 2018 9:03 pm

Hi all
planning to go up in a couple weeks for a few days. Hows the fishing there around winter? never been up gippsland way during the cold season.
Was down at Marlo during summer and had a ball at the narrows thanks to Re-Tyred's tip.

Any tips on fishing down there in winter? prob mainly be around Marlo (and will try French Narrows again) but may do a day at Bemm. Is it possible to go prawning still or too cold? Wont have a surf rod to fish the beaches unfortunately. We only going up in a sedan can you drive up to the Yeerung river on Yerrung river rd? cant really see if its possible without a 4WD on google maps

thanks in advance!

Don't know about LB
Plenty of bream at Bemm River, I think they have boat hire.
Sandstorm & running sinker
You can drive to the channel, but, I think you need 4x4

Bemm is difficult for landbase.
It,s possible along the river and there is a platform near the ramp but general access to lake very limited without a boat.

Mouth is Open at Bemm, id defenitely be hiring a boat from the boat hire place and fishing the system
speak to the Tackle shop guy there on your way in,. the fish generally have a chat to him everyday so he knows where they are most times.

Land based at bemm river is hard but not impossible, best after dark at the ramp. You will mostly get bream, with the odd luderick and EPs.

Lakes entrance fishes better landbased during winter in my opinion, you have all the rivers (Tambo, Nicholson, etc) and local jetties around metung full of bream and trevs, sometimes tailor

thanks for all the advice
we were thinking about hiring a boat at bemm too. If we dont catch anything atleast we will have a great time sight seeing

Will think about lakes but dont think we will have time. Hopefully it wont be too windy and raining when we are down there.

I used to do very well at Bemm landbased along the river. You will catch fish in the snags, but be prepared for some almighty bust-offs. The surf fishing is pretty spectacular at times, too - you can fish the beaches along the way and up to Pearl Point with a standard spinning outfit at times, as the channel is deep in close. Just take some metal slugs / even heavy soft plastics for casting, or throw out some blue bait and walk with the drift - there should be some big salmon about, I would think.

Marlo during the winter use to be great walk around in shorts, but with this cold snap East Gippsland is coping it too.
Frenchs narrows is for when the rivers high and pushes the fish down there.
Brodribb river under the road bridge, and around the back ramp.
The snowy along the road to Orbost.
And a secret go to Cape Conran and find the dirt road that will take you to the Yeerung river, theres a couple of fishing spots even behind the beach.
this time of year no crowds it should be full of bream.
And then there's the surf fishing, Conran, the narrows, Point Ricardo and there's a dirt track at Corringle at the end of the road heading for ewing marsh past the two properties turn left head for the beach (don't try if its been raining) 4x4 at best.
