Slide Baiting for Bronzies

Post by smokin_reels » Thu Jan 17, 2019 8:28 am

Hey Guys,

Have been inspired by some of the bronze whalers caught off the surf lately.
Been doing a bit of reading into slide baiting and how to apply it to catch myself a shark.

Found an excellent blog post on slide baiting , well worth a flick if anyone is interested. Its got numerous applications, targetting sharks is just one of them.
http://blog.effectivefishing.com.au/slide-bait-rig/

I grabbed a Tekota 700 that was sitting unused in the shed and have paired it with a Daiwa Surf rod that can cast up to 5oz.
Ordered all the sinkers and slides from Busted fishing , cant wait for the long weekend.

I am heading up to Marlo and hopefully can get a livie or a big deadbait with a circle hook in it sitting in gutter somewhere.

comments on baits, tactics, rigs and leaders. welcome.
Wire or no wire?
the consensus i have come to is 150lb leader and single circle to a tailor hooked in the tail.

report to follow :water:

Good luck, I’ve been hoping to get a toothy over the summer but the winds around here haven’t been favourable - too much variation in wind direction throughout the day to make ballooning feasible.

No , you wont. Because even the 20lb leader at the bottom is plenty to retrieve just the sinker.

The weaker mono at the bottom is just as a fail safe, in the happy eventuality that a big fish rips off with it and heads to a reef or something and gets the sinker stuck.

We used 8 to 10 oz sinkers.
Good luck

Thats a handy tip! I thought about using the 8oz-10oz sinkers, but currently have a surf rod that can throw only 5oz . Hoping that is enough.
Will save up and get something heavier, those south african rods looks mighty nice.

What rod and reel do you run?
