Tannin water trout..

Post by meppstas » Thu Feb 21, 2019 3:18 pm

This trip was yesterday, dark tannin water after recent rain was the reason I headed to this river. Once there I found it was much darker than I would have preferred it to be. Couldn't see the river bottom in 18 inches & deeper water, had to slowly work my way up the river. Still spent several hours in it chasing trout which were few & far between. It was foggy when I first hit the water, it didn't last all that long which was good. I'll certainly be heading back there in a week or two, shame the solid 835 gram brown couldn't be released due to gill damage. I dropped it off to a dear old lady up the road from us who originally comes from Scotland.. She loves her trout..I've only kept three trout this season from the 360+ caught so far which isn't too bad. All six trout were taken on Mepps Aglia Furia & Black Fury lures..
As much as I hate the blackberry bushes that are spreading across the land here Tassie, this is the only time of the year they're useful..

Mate, you're living the dream!
If i got a job offer in TAS, I'd finish packing up before I could finish my first beer.
Nice photos, nice fish. Trout heaven over there.

Good one. I've never had a great deal of luck in tannin water. Fish usually seem super sluggish, give a slow kind of whatever follow then slowly peel off. Low oxygen, lot of leaves and foliage breaking down in the water. But for me it's been in no flow water. Suppose if there is at least some flow, even minimal, there is some oxygen replenishment. My mum, now gone, loved trout so whenever I caught some she got some. The smile on her face was priceless so I can imagine the friend of yours being the same.

Another great trip out Adrian, great report and as always awesome pictorial journey you bring us on. It may not have been ideal, not withstanding Betty's dinner, very generous of you, but six trout is very respectable, definitely 6 more than my tally.

This Little Old Lady, Jan & Dean sang about the one from Pasadena, Betty might have been their follow up song about the one from Sheffield

Or is Betty a bit more rambunctious?

There is no mention of Blackberries finding their way for Pam's breakfast , , , , BUT knowing the bloke you are, I bet the pick of the Blackberries did get to Pam AND with an accompanied batch of meppstas golden pancakes.

Thanks Adrian, always love your adventures and the reports.

Cheers Bill
