SA, Winter Snapper in the Shallows

Post by Bugatti » Thu May 23, 2019 12:50 pm

Once upon a time, , , , in a land far far away , , , , well , , , , last night in South Australia.

The Brother in-law and I have been keen to get out and check out the shallows between Glenelg & Brighton to see if the Winter Snapper have turned up. Winter Snapper come through here and are normally minimum 50+ cm through to 9-10 kgs , , , , great fun in shallow water. Plus only 3 - 5 kms from the ramp and only about 300 meters from shore :)

Our trip was more of a scouting trip rather than just about catching Snapper. We knew some small ones were being caught out deeper but we wanted to see if the BIG Boys are in town.

Well, finally after a few attempts which failed due to commitments, weather, or tide conditions. We were at West Beach Boat Ramp , , , , launching away.

Anchored and waiting. Willyweather got it wrong. Here, one of the things that needs to happen is calm conditions, otherwise no Snaps. Plus tide against wind, we were perpendicular to both , , , , not promising :(

But , , , , life's pretty good anyway.

After a few hours of catching these guys, we had our Jackson 5 (all returned) so a move was in order.

Out deeper, about 4-6 kms , , , , there are structures that hold Pannies (38 - 50 cm) and some bigger units. But we may have missed our time , , , , being well past High Tide and well past Sunset, by which they normally have shut down by now.

Well, it was Danny De Ditto there too. Port Jackson Shark convention.

5.PNG

Did I say there were a lot , , , , well there were.

7.PNG

Well , , , , finally there was weight , , , , woohoo , , , ,

Yippee

You Beauty

You little rippa

Oh, I see , , , , We don't want to play anymore , , , , We want to go home , , , , We want our Mommy

Banjo.PNG

Fact is, we both knew as soon as the first lift of the rod , , , , heavy dead weight , , , , it was Patterson time :(

So in the style of Banjo

"There was movement in the Boat,
as the word was getting round.
That the Snapper were elusive,
and nowhere to be found.

So the lads packed up their gear,
as the fishing was no more.
And they rode their trusty Vessel,
all the way back to shore.

There was no disappointment,
as there was fun abound..
And in the wash bay area,
an Ol' mate called Ken was found.

They laughed and chatted happily,
with stories of fish and might.
while planning their next fishing trip,
they bid each other , , , , Goodnight."

WOW bug,
Heaps better than your "jack" inspired ramblings (or was it Jim)
Photos are reasonable, considering it's night
The poem of course is the standout
At least you were getting something
Better than sitting on the computer all night
Cheers Gra

"I like BIG Snapper, and they gatta be RED,
They gotta have a bump on their head.
You other brothers can't deny,
you've got envy in your eye.
You've just been handed,
when this fish was landed.
You can't be match'n,

And if you're chasing Squidlies,

And please don't be no Dummies,
And leave those Mommy Gummies.
And do you remeber when you caught that snook,
, , , , maaaan, you know it was a flook.

Cuz I'm tell'n ya

I like BIIIIG Snapper, and they gatta be REEEED,
They gotta have a bump on their heeeead.
You other brothers can't deny,
you've got envy in your eye.
You've just been handed,
when this fish was landed.
You can't be match'n,
what I've been catch'n.
So you can spit ya Dummy,
and run off to ya Mummy.
Cuz my fish is in the Buck't,
and you can just say , , , ,

As they say, “ you gotta be in it to win it”!
At least you gave it a crack mate.
All those years I lived in Adelaide I never knew of the winter big red run in that area.
I used to be too busy catching big mullet with a special mullet mix I used to make down at Henley beach jetty and big gars from grange

Thanks LX.

Yeah, it was more of a scouting trip and an "ironing out the bugs" on my Brother in-law's boat for Snapper fishing. We usually go in my Boat but he wants to "pick up the ropes" with his. Good Boatie and Fisherman he is, and always trying to better his prowess, which is good.

I love "the Special Mullet Mix" , , , , it is an art form and a concoction of fantastic ingredients. My Dad made one that worked well (which he was proud of) and was a "Greek influenced" recipe.

And yes, those Red Beakers of Gar were like Bicycle Pumps :)

Sounds perfect for kayaking
Hey smokin, finally found your post. I was holding off replying as I knew a trip there was coming soon.

It is a great Kayaking area, heaps go down there and you don't have to paddle out far. They do well from Squid, Whiting, Gar, Blue Crabs, Snook and the ever popular Snapper.
