Wangaratta cod, finally landed one on a surface lure.
Plan was to go to Goulburn. Got up 2:45am and last minute plan change, drove 3hrs to Wangaratta instead, lol.
Plan was to fish the sunrise low light on surface first around 5:30am, but the additional hour made me and my mate late. By the time we got there the sun was already slightly up around 6:30am.
Thought give the surface lure a try for half an hour or so.
5th cast and BOOF! The extended rear treble worked and the fish was on and stayed on. Not big but fish is a fish. And my first cod landed on surface lure!
Had another small cod following the surface lure minutes later but didn't hit the lure, quiet after that. Lost the surface lure minutes later. The regret was, I was looking away when the boof happened. Only saw the after splash
Kebab lunch and fished again using stump jumper. I dropped a small cod and had another 'looker', I'd say around 60cm cod, but didn't hit the lure. My mate caught one around 40cm.
Was warm, muggy and flies everywhere. We're done by 4pm, got home at 7:30pm. Not a very successful trip in comparison to the effort put, but had some action and caught one each. Good enough. 4 hours sleep, long drive and 10 hours fishing, exhausting.

Good work Seb, persistence pays off, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish

Re: Wangaratta cod, finally landed one on surface lure.
Thanks Dave.
Only took me few seasons and dozen lures lost, til finally hooked and landed one on surface. LoL.
Got it figured out I hope. I have a feeling I'll get more cod on surface this season. Just gotta find the time to travel far.
I think, the fact that I was looking away, I didn't strike straight away on the boof, and got the fish hooked.
Often in the past, I strike within milliseconds of just pure reaction (though I shouldn't), and never got them hooked.
Same tricks for Goulburn river cod? Cast surface lure around snags in low light time of the day?

Pretty much Seb, and yeah give the fish a chance to take the lure before you strike, it can be pretty hard sometimes, especially when it smashes the lure at your feet and scares the crap out if you, cheers davoSeb85 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2019 8:34 amThanks Dave.

I know right! Few boofs I had in the past, happened quite close to the feet.
That boof was around 6:45am. It woke me up. The heart was racing, the adrenaline was high.
