Looking for an all rounder rod/reel

Post by HarisPilton » Sun Jan 05, 2020 2:00 pm

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to fishing in general and I wanted to know what a good size rod and reel is to use lures off the beach as well as using bait.

Is there an all rounder size rod?

I used my mates 15 footer and it seemed a pain in the ass to use, it feels so big and heavy.

Looking forward to the replies. I'm really excited about starting to fish off the beach :-D

I fish from the beach (and occasionally piers) throughout the year and use 2 sizes mostly: 12-13ft for long casting bait for snapper, gummy etc as well as salmon spinning and 6ft10-7ft for soft plastics for flathead and jigs for squid.
I started out with a 9 footer for bait fishing from piers. I still occasionally use it for salmon and a lot of people prefer that size when spinning, but I don't mind the 13ft here so the 9ft doesn't see a lot of action.
I'd recommend a surf rod like the Penn Prevail or Storm Gomuku (both 3 piece 13ft) for bait fishing from the beach. You can pair that with a 8000-10000 sized reel like the Shimano Aerlex or Penn Spinfisher. That'll have you hunting snapper, gummies, salmon & tailor, even whiting. Spool with 30lb braid.
Second rod (sorry mate!) could be a 7ft Shimano Raider or Catana with a 2500-3000 sized reel (eg. Sienna/Sedona). That will cover the soft plastics and squidding. Spool with 10-15lb braid. btw I use these smaller rods with a 1000 sized reel for bream. Light braid, I think around 6lb on mine.
All the best with it!

If this is about your budget this is actually a good deal going atm. Rod is 9' 6-12kg and from memory cast weight is 25-65g or something similar. Matched up with a 6000 sedona for 149.
