Hopefully there’s going to be heaps around 😊 I never get sick of catching them.
yep, same. you should try 3 and 4lb next time mate, its next level madness :vy:
1-3kg trout rod, 2000 reel with 3kg max drag and 4lb for catching 1-2kg aussie salmon??
Now that's a good exercise for the heart.

The last time I hooked a 2.5 kg sambo on 2-4kg rod 10lb line, felt like I was gonna get a heart attack. Lol. Was fun though.

Personal thoughts on fishing light for salmon

Don't bother with 3-4lb just use 6lb for leader, has no effect on how much hurt you can put on the fish when you are using a 1-3 but does mean if you get a good fish you have a bit more protection through a longer fight. Also check how big the salmon are first, last year I caught a 67 that went just under 3kg on a 1-3 was a lot of fun at first and became a pain in the arse at the end. Took 31 mins to land (filmed the whole fight) and I was putting way more hurt on it than most people are prepared to with a 1-3. Anything up to mid 50s is fair game for a 1-3, over that sometimes it can take a while to land and I usually swap over to a 2-4

Depends how far we are allowed to travel.

Big distance and its a gippsland trip for some more bream, other than that I've got quite a few plans on where to go just depends if I can go there.
Do you find the bream will be on the bottom water column by now Maz? Slow rolling small plastic and 1/16 jig head?
Really depends on the system, water temp and fresh in flow. If I head to gippy first up I'm trying topwater, then shallow hards, then deep hards and if still no love and there's fish deep I'll break out the plastics. Locally I would try hards or crabs on the edges to see if there's still fish feeding on them and then start to look for fish schooled up or sitting on some deeper structure. Order I do things in is more to do with what techniques I like fishing but usually this is the time of year where they can be a bit all over the place depending on the conditions

More freshwater and cooler temp means they'll sit deeper?
Especially with recent cold front and heavy rain.
Good idea to start top then go deeper.
Cheers :tu:

Keeping it local, St Leonards land based targeting the favorites of squid, garfish and whatever else is around.

I’ve been watching the salmon bust up from the beach and the gars schooling over the weed. Few pinkies around too.
