During snapper season I always just bypass that area. Everytime it’s like Vic marketSteveoTheTiger wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 11:02 amThis is an area i only just started exploring last year when i started launching more from Newport.
Unfortunately due to life i missed all of last years snapper season but we did catch a heap of squid earlier in the year (as i reported here) in the area between Willy oval and Point Cook Marine Park.
I remember the day after the previous lockdown ended i went down to Point Gellibrand for a walk and i have never seen so many boats on the water at once. Almost anchored on top of each other lol.

The 8oz bombs and shitty pilchard lobbed onto their top deck works a treat after a couple of shots. Bonus points of a rotten smelling anchor well complete with maggots if they don't clean it properly

There is no doubt there is some quality snapper around that area but its also a shite fight to sift through the micro pinkies that keep smashing the baits because of the reef that attracts them there. Patience like always is the key...

Re: My tips and tricks to snapper fishing
I dont have a problem with people coming and anchoring near me, but keep your distance... 50m minimum, but 100m+ is better and stay the hell out of the area behind me (ie. my berley trail).
I had one boat with a family on board come VERY close to me and drop his electric winch anchor, maybe 25 metre away. I had just dropped a gummy as i tried to lift it into the boat and he probably saw that as he made his way over. We were right in the middle of a group of 5 or more boats. He obviously had no idea what he was doing as he dropped his anchor until it hit the bottom and didnt let any extra rode out to let the anchor set. Within minutes he was drifting so close that i was getting the boat hook ready to push him off, less than a boat length. He didnt even notice until i started yelling at them to take control of their boat.
He came within 2 metres before he back away to a more suitable distance.. without raising his anchor.
This was when i was still in my tinny, in which we had 3 or 4 close calls that were much more dangerous.
Anyway /rant

Re: My tips and tricks to snapper fishing
At least if it gets super bad you can move or tell them to move half the time at Mornington they either don’t speak English or ignore you when you ask them to move during the break between stage four I went fishing at Mornington and a guy comes and sets up next to me between two of my rods in less then 1 metre
