Any recommendation for the kayak fishing spots in Melbourne?

Post by yyuankm » Sun Feb 14, 2021 11:35 am

Hi guys, I just got my 3.7m eagle double kayak. I am looking for some fresh water fishing spots for beginners in Melbourne, especially in the West area. Any comments are welcome. Thanks!

Thanks mate. I also live in point cook. I often row in Sanctuary Lake, but never try fish there. Better close to PC for sure. But I think driving less than 1 hour is acceptable for us.

There's Melton reservoir,
Then around 1hr'ish drive are Daylesford lake, Wendouree, Lauriston, Eppalock, heaps more. You can check Fishersies' stocking database to see which lakes stocked with fish. Even Albert Park is a nice place to paddle and fish.

There's also Werribee river and Barwon river.

Its not fresh water, but Campbells Cove is a good spot to launch and paddle over to the RAAF jetty. The other side of the jetty is good for squid and the whole area is good for flathead, whiting and pinkies.
The only thing better than serenity is a two stroke at full throttle!

Thanks. It is quite helpful. For Melton Reseivor, is it only open for public kayaking and fishing for a certain area? May I ask where you often launch kayak there? I also tried land fishing on Werribee river close to the golf club, but found it is so hard to get fish there. It is hard to launch the kayak there either. Any suggestion for the area to easy launch the kayak and get fish there?

Are you only interested in fresh?
Otherwise what Steveo said, Campbell's cove.
You can launch in Werribee south ramp and paddle into the river for some bream.

Haven't been to Melton reservoir on kayak, only ever been landbased a while ago. But I know some people do well kayak fishing there. Not sure where they launch. Nothing a goodle map and YouTube can't help though.

Sanctuary lakes is good for kayak fishing btw. I wrote some info a little while ago about it. Use the search function in this forum, heaps of info covered in the past.

Thanks mate. I am also interested in the salt water fishing. Just a little worried about kayaking in the sea as the start of using my kayak. :)

I will also have a look on this spot.

Make sure you go out close to high tide there, also calm and or low west/northwest wind. Go out with someone experienced if it's going to be your first time, etc.
