Leather jackets, SE Melbourne anywhere?
Hi all,
Anyone know of reliable spots to catch leather jackets land based around Melbourne, preferable South East?
Used to eat them in Asia all the time, simply delicious and they're fast growing so a good fish to harvest, would love to get onto them.

I've caught them at Flinders Pier. Not sure of being reliable though. And not exactly South East.

I've found Flinders Pier to be really unreliable for LJ's. Sometimes the place is just dead.
Sorrento Pier is my favorite LJ spot, but it's just as far away as Flinders.
Mornington Pier always has a lot of very small ones
Behind the Yacht Club at Canadian Bay is very snaggy but there is always LJs there
Mordialloc Pier is fairly consistent - if you can't find them by fishing straight down around the pylons, try casting out off the right hand side between the second and third light poles.

I've caught some legal-sized leatherjackets at Portsea Pier, though sometimes it's hard to get past all the wrasse. Aside from some of the other piers mentioned above, I'd maybe give Black Rock Pier a go at high tide if you're looking at the south-east. Any pier that gives you access to a bit of reef and rock is worthy of an exploratory session or two.

Top end of WPB is pretty good for leatherjackets. Lots of piers around with access to patchy grass, take your pick.

You mean 1 cm long? Every size is legal for this fish.Charles7 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 8:27 pmI've caught some legal-sized leatherjackets at Portsea Pier, though sometimes it's hard to get past all the wrasse.
