Vancouver Bait Supplies - Closed

Post by Mattblack » Mon Jul 18, 2022 9:16 am

I used to buy buy my pilchards in bulk from Vancouver Bait Supplies in Williamstown, but they are now closed due to the commercial netting ban in Port Phillip Bay.
Anybody know if it's still possible to buy Victorian/locally sourced pilchards?

It's a shame, that's where I bought my pilchards too. Now I just buy the expensive servo stuff that's not even fresh and have to settle for it.

Go and catch them yourself. That's what Kramer, Raynor etc and FOCBAG wanted. And that's what they got

cast nets are actually pretty good, you get one for like $25 and then your set for fresh bait. sure it might get tangled or whatever but it will still be better then buying old squid or pilchards for $10 or more.

Winter is the time to stock up on squid heads and from around the end of August is the time to catch silver whiting in Corio bay vac sealed and ready for snapper season
There are plenty of yakka in southern ppb at the moment

Travel to QLD, use your net there and come back here with your fresh bait. :-)

You might want to educate yourself a little bit more on legal fishing practices in Victoria.

Saw a guy using a cast net at the werribee south River entrance, he got nothing but a bucket load of weed and puffers. Tried to tell him it was illegal and I copped an ears bashing, not wanting to be caught in his net over the altercation I decided to leg it. Saw another guy a while back at Barwon Heads using it to catch mullets, and he actualy did pretty good with it filling his esky. Not worth getting caught though, big fines
