Splurged on a yak
Finally took the plunge after ages - got myself a hobie outback, will be picking it up in about a week or so.
Suggestions for a maiden voyage? Thinking of going to Mt Martha beach and then heading out towards the pillar OR Fishermans Beach.
Curious to know if anyone here has some experience with diving/spearing off their kayak as well.

Congrats on the purchase. Did you buy new or second hand? I had the opportunity to cruise around in a 2018 outback this year and it was a heap of fun.

Re: Splurged on a yak
The outback is a great yak for the fishing on offer around melbourne. I would let the weather help pick where you take it out the first time to give calm conditions to get used to it etc.
For kayak diving (and some great info on safety and other aspects of kayak fishing) jump over to vyak there's a few guys on there that do it and I'm not sure if they have accounts on here as well

Re: Splurged on a yak
Congrats!
Like mazman mentioned, check a nice calm low wind day, say 15kmh or less. Get all the safety stuff too. Very important. Someday this summer I will practice re-entry.
I've fished fisherman's beach couple times on my yak, a good spot to fish on a yak, no need to travel too far off the beach.

Went new - had been keeping my eye out on used listings but hadn't been able to find one that I liked.

Re: Splurged on a yak
Yeah have got a safety flag and PDF, and have had some experience in other kayaks with re-entry/rolling. Weather permitting, I'll probably take it out to Mt Martha and do a few practice rolls/re-entries to get familiar with it without loading it up with the rods. Not really keen on dunking my reels whilst I sort that out haha.Seb85 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 8:07 amCongrats!
