Clifton Springs - 7/04/2024

Hey all, Punched out for a quick session, couldn't spend more than two hours on the water. Launched 7am, back in by 9am. Light winds, overcast, cool temp. Getting chilly! Heading straight out from the ramp 2.5 - 3.0m chasing calamari. Caught six, kept five. All were super timid, and would strike on ...

Ending the Season with a bang.

The weather is turning. The kings have slowed down. The current is running from the south and we're getting more and more Southerly winds and rain. I wandered out after work this morning looking for a relaxing afternoon on the ledge. We haven't seen a good fish for about a month now but I still took...

Kayak Lessons and Launch Spots

Hi all, Been a while since I've seen much local Melbourne posts. Thought I'd start some chatter... Got a pedal kayak about a year ago. Spent about a year researching what fit my purposes and budget and landed on a propel 10. Been an absolute game changer for me, always hated fishing off of land only...

Re: Kayak Lessons and Launch Spots

I'll have to give those spots a go, been widening my range as the confidence builds. Been meaning to try launch into Patterson River/Lakes, see some big bream people catch on YouTube. Im in the same boat as you, no pun intended, regarding Stony Point. Looks like a great spot but more factors to cons...

Re: Specialist squid rod for kayak

Hey mate! I can relate as someone who had a like-minded thought process about getting a dedicated shorter EGI rod for the kayak.  My experience: I run a shorter 7'9 Daiwa Emeraldas, and one major thing that I personally didn't think to consider was how the length of the butt relates to the overall p...

Re: Specialist squid rod for kayak

I’ve never owned an EGI rod, tbh I’ve been waiting for my 2-4kg savage gear black combos to fail. I’m not a fan of them, they’re not the nicest setups but they don’t give up, and have landed 100’s of calamari. I can’t comment on whether investing in another EGI is worthwhile or not, however a tip I ...

Re: Specialist squid rod for kayak

I like my 8ft Sephia egi rod. Good for landbased and still ok on kayak. I use long handle net though, one of those berkley rubber net. So scooping into the net isn't too hard. The length can be handy too, to steer from one side of the kayak to another. As i can straighten my arm plus the length of t...

Re: Specialist squid rod for kayak

Don't shorten the rod. 8"6 is way too long on a yak.
Look for the 7"6 like Andrews suggested, it will be the best option. Will double up as a salmon slug rod too from the yak.

Re: Specialist squid rod for kayak

Going against the grain here a bit but I fish an 8'6 egi rod off my kayak and have no issues with it. I net them in a similar manner to what Tim said except I just give a couple of kick pumps of the pedals when the squid is roughly a rod length away and hold my rod forwards which makes the squid swi...
