Whiting Bait-How I do it

Post by denis barden » Thu Dec 31, 2020 9:21 am

I dont purchase any bait -I fish for squid and get mussels from the guy next door
I clean squid and freeze them for a few days .Get em out and hit em with a small mallet-Not too mushy- then cut them into strips about 50mm x 8mm and then refreeze them for later use.
Mussels are pre opened, drained of excess water in the garage then mixed with heaps of salt to harden them up so they dont freeze together in freezer .Put in freezer for later.
Putting salt on the mussels hardens them up so you can thread them on a hook -To stay on longer
When i take a box of each fushin I put them into an Esky so they stay hard most of the day

Not that I've ever fished for whiting, but, the squid strips seem larger than I expected. For some reason I visualize a small long shank hook, like a garfish hook.
Great information Denis

My mate caught a couple on plastic. It's definitely possible.
1-3 kg soft taper rod like Infeet is perfect. When I hooked on that 39cm kgw, was on my Infeet and Abu MGX 8lb. A lot of fun, they fight hard.
