Landbased whiting

Post by wishtofish » Sat Jan 23, 2021 2:41 pm

Wanting to head out one of these next couple of nights for some whiting, been looking at dromana beach/anthony's nose, coronet bay or somewhere around Geelong.
Any updates on these spots or anyone know of any decent spots that have had some fish come through?
Cheers :tu:

I caught one off Portarlington breakwall years ago, I assume they're still around

St. Leonards peir at night has whiting on the bite or you could try the Barwon river just as the tide turns from incoming to outgoing, that hour window should bet you a whiting on pipies

Cheers, have seen that St. Leonards has been doing pretty well with a mixed bag. Will take it into consideration.

St Leonards has been going good, plenty of kgw being caught at night along quite a few horse mackerel collecting under the lights. Squid are around, but not as active as it has previously been a few months ago. Still worth bringing a squid jig.

You can still get some nice fish in the day, garfish have started running again on the inside of the pier, they're not huge, but there is a few. Squid are around, but not in huge numbers. We had a big spawn of squid within the last fortnight, picture attached. Juveniles are moving into the pier and will be bigger in a few weeks/month.

Caught a few kgw in the day last week + undersize flatties. Snapper are pretty quiet right now due to the lack of north winds. Best winds for clear water are sheltered S/SW while a N/NE are better for dirty water.

I'll be giving it the squid a flick Tuesday morning, may see you around!

No worries, I've outlined two things in this drone shot. First is the green area, you can see all the sandy holes where you'll get flathead and kgw. Squid will collect in these spots too. The red dots on the pier are the lights. Great spot for when the kgw are actively moving around, you'll also get flathead and other species using it as a highway. The green shaded areas are the sandy-weed holes, both spots work well at night but the concrete has the advantage of the lights attracting squid and other species. Hope that helps!

Someone had a torch in the water at portarlington pier the other night and we could see hundreds of kgw, they weren’t biting though. Try there if you haven’t been yet.

You sure they weren't yakkas? You get a lot of them hanging around at night there, especially if you throw out a bit of burley. Drop down a bit of pilchard on a paternoster if you want to catch one, alternatively you can spend $3000 on an ajing setup and throw little soft plastics at them.
