on my last trip to the islands in the gulf ( march 2013) we hit many schools of nanny and released most...they kept biting until we left..not saying im a expert...just my opinion of what ive seen

Whitting myth! On a hotbite I throw undersize fish back all the time and it doesn't stop the hotbite!

maybe i should have clarified....on the reds, if you drop the first one, the school scarpers.... after you've landed a few they tend to hang around. At least, that's up the east coast...

Probably only one way to know for sure and that would be underwater cameras and see what happens to the fish when one is released.

It's not a myth whiting get spooked very easy always keep the smaller ones in a live tank then when ur done put them back

I've found Whiting spook very easily. Doesn't take much, and I've lost a hot bite after dropping a Fish.
The good thing is the school doesn't normally move much, a 10-50m move and you'll find them again.
