Re: Bender’s Redfin Report / Photo Comp!!!
Thought I might as well have a go at this comp!
ROCKLANDS RESERVOIR REDFIN
Rocklands Reservoir is a large body of water situated to the far West of the Grampians.
I go camping there fairly often and have a ball every time, whether the fishing is good or not.
It's a well know lake for big reddies - so I'll get straight to the topic!
WHERE:
Rocklands is one of the best camp/fish locations in Victoria. My favourite spot would be close to, but not in the main camping ground, which I believe is here on the map. (red circle.) It usually provides nice, deep water but since the water level is low at the moment it is quite shallow and the big fish are holding in deeper water. You will get great access from a boat/tinny.
HOW:
I always fish with a variety of baits and lures. During the day, I will either use bait from the shore with a sinker (best baits are worms, and yabbies. If you use corn you also have a good chance of getting carp.) or use lures from a tinny. Bobbers and ice jigs are my favourite to use around snags. Plenty of redfin caught that way.
Spinning from the bank is the most productive method of fishing at dawn and dusk, especially when the water level is high.
Sometimes it's a redfin every cast, simply insane!
Best lures are blades, spinners and small hardbodies in general. These fish will take anything you throw at them if they're hungry enough!
They also love grub style plastics. WHEN:
Dawn and dusk are easily the best times of the day.
From January to June has been the most productive time of year for me.
WHY:
To sum it up, Rocklands is a beautiful location that holds a huge number of native creatures/plants and it produces some excellent fishing.
Camping there is fantastic, and I recommend that you guys check it out! :a_goodjob: :a_goodjob: :a_goodjob:
Some more pics!
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask in the DISCUSSION thread.
Cheers, Trev :a_goodjob:
EDIT: Sorry about the size variety of the pictures. They were all taken on different devices and the resizing process has been different for some of them.

Re: Bender’s Redfin Report / Photo Comp!!!
I'm using my then 4 year old son as a potential vote winner.
8 months ago or so, I took my young bloke out for for his 1st "successful" fishing trip on a channel between Tatura and Murchison.
I was casting the lures (squidgee rainbow wriggler), out and letting my young fella wind in them in near a "drop bar". 2nd or 3rd cast we got a small reddie which much to my young fellas delight, spat out a small tiddler that he set free. And reddie too.
There must of been a good school in the turbulent water feeding, because that day we caught about 25-30 reddies. All fairly small, but a few over the 35cm mark.
That day I was sold on squidge's and just using a slow retrieve method. Casting into the turbulent water and slowly retrieving into the slow water, that is usually when I got a strike as the 2 waters joined. I cruise around drop bars and usually give them 20 mins, if no fish, move to the next one.
This is one of my most memorable trips, as it was great to see the excitement in my young fellas eyes. He's had plenty of non-eventful trips since.
So here is my proof in pics and that is what a reddie looks like, not that I've seen one for a long time. Hopefully when the farmers stop irrigating, they'll come back on the bite and I can win Benders other comp. Maybe have a quick flick after dawn service in the morning.

- Notice how the fish is closer to the camera, he's a natural at making the fish look bigger
