I've seen this happen on piers and rocks, a good samaritan wants to help you land a decent fish so grabs your graphite rod half way down the blank lifting the fish trying to grab the leader, all of a sudden Boom ! the blank snaps, classic rookie mistake, always use the rod to pump the fish in as close as possible, never touch the rod blank by hand ! Graphite is not user friendly as a lever... no matter how long it takes to get a hand on the leader let the rod tire the fish out first. Fiberglass rods different story altogether, you can beat the crap out of the fish and still not break it.

Yep lesson learnt alright, I felt silly after I did it as I knew I should of held the rod where I did

Yep dont high stick it like you said. And yep dont touch the graphite blank. Stay on the hand grip. I'm sure many people had to learn it the hard way at some time in the past. Had to happen to me twice! Before I finally learnt the lesson.

Yep Happened to me with a graphite squid stick I high stuck it holding the rod half way up the blank raising a large squid and boom! scared the bajeeeses out of me sounded like a gun shot !
