Victorian Notice to Mariners
AUSTRALIA – VICTORIA
No. 158 (T) - 2020
PORT PHILLIP
DRILL RIG OCEAN ONYX EXCLUSION ZONE
Date: 21 May 2020

Details: Mariners are advised that the drill rig Ocean Onyx shifted from its current location to
a layup position 37° 58’ 43.62’’ S 144° 46’ 32.5’’E, to the north west of anchorages S13
and S15 at 0200 on the 21 May 2020. The drill rig will layup until further notice.
A 500 metre exclusion zones will be in force around the Ocean Onyx. Only vessels
specifically exempted may enter the exclusion zone.
The following vessels are exempted from the exclusion zone;
• Bass Trek (MSV 7140)
• Bass Rover (MSV 12260)
• MV Adamas (MSV 11456
Further information can be obtained from Melbourne VTS on 9644 9700 or VHF
channel 12.
Mariners are advised to navigate with caution in the vicinity of the Ocean Onyx
and instructed to remain outside the exclusion zone unless specifically
exempted.

It's not really an oil rig, but it is for drilling the seabed. They were going to use it to explore some offshore gas deposits off Cape Otway somewhere but I guess Covid and the bankruptcy of the owner put a stop to that.

Right now it's just chilling out in the middle of the bay until it gets sent somewhere else.

If they ever get gas rigs off Cape Otway they would become absolute fish magnets, although there's always a risk of a spill/leak which could ruin an otherwise fairly pristine bit of ocean.

It seems to me as I still don't exactly understand what's happening here, but I'll try to figure it out.
