the v shape holds the rod in a tighter position. thats about it.

For freshwater bank fishing I prefer a rod holder that keeps the whole rod off the bank. Those colourful ones on ebay are also available in Rays for less, but they are no better than a stick - maybe a bit stronger

Here is a rod holder we made. It holds the rod securely off the ground. When the fish strikes, you can quickly grab the rod.

pvc holders are great, they are lightweight and can be stacked/stored easily as well as being incredibly cheap and easy to make/replace.

most tackle stores also sell them

also, the 2 holders in the original post are designed to work together. the u-shaped one is larger and the v shaped one is smaller, when used together they can hold your rod and reel off the ground at an angle
