First Shark off the Sand

Post by smokin_reels » Mon Nov 27, 2017 9:27 am

Hey Guys,

I headed down towards Marlo this weekend.
the plan in my head was to gather some bait during the day and try fishing for Gummy's at night off the beach.
Point to note, this was my only second attempt at trying to fish for them.

We arrived and after setting up camp, i had a quick flick on the flats and had a 58-60 cm Flathead on a Nories Laydown.
A new P.B for me, I could have headed home right then and been a happy man.

I then swung by the beach around sunset, beer in hand.

A few quick flicks with the trusty old Gillies had me land some Bait size Salmon.
I headed back to camp and had some dinner.
High tide was at 1 am, I planned to fish 11pm-2am and see what i could manage.

I kept thing simple, an 8/0 Circle snelled onto a 60lb leader. With a Ball sinker rolling all the way to the hook, FG knot to the mainline (40lb Braid)
Fresh salmon cutlet as bait.

First bait got destroyed by crabs.
Second cast, the rod slams over 10 min after casting.

Fast runs, headshakes , the occasional clip of a tail on the line pinging through! I thought this was it!

After about 15 min in the surf , I finally saw a long grey shape draw up. I ran down the dune and grabbed the fish by the tail.
I had done it!
On closer inspection, i realized this was a school shark and not a gummy.
Measured tip of nose to tail, went 1.46m .
Broomstick tells me that this a good size schoolie for the beach, I take his word for it. I know nothing about this sort of thing.
Made for a cracking photograph, popped the circle hook, swum away.

I had a skate and port jacksons after that, no pictures.

The next day was a repeat of the same routine, with the addition of small mullet being caught in the surf and an eel off the estuary.

Up popped a 7 Gill Shark around 2 am, had us chasing it down the beach with a big sideways run in a deep gutter.
Didnt hang around for too many pics, just one clear-ish one while I was swinging him back into the drink.

Drove back on Sunday, Slightly knackered from lack of sleep , but a fine end to a glorious weekend.
Well and truly have caught the land based shark fishing bug, will be chasing some Gummies again soon. Still havent caught one!
But pleased as punch!
