I was out yesterday trying to chase gummies, these pests are seriously in plague proportions. It's so damn frustrating!! I literally caught 6 in an hour or so. God forbid you throw a burley bucket overboard...

I'll be the first to lobby to have them exterminated from this bay... Victoria.. Australia.. Planet.. Universe!

The banjo slayer

Natural selection... from what I read, people don't eat them and (hopefully) throw them back most of the time.

Meanwhile they take out all the delicious snapper and other better eating fish. That = more banjos out in the wild!

There's a story about samurai crabs in Japan... there's a species they fish for there, and every now and then one would have a shell that looked like a Samurai mask / helmet, and they'd throw those back for good luck. Eventually, there were far more crabs with samurai looking shells than not, all breeding, and now the whole species pretty much has that particular look.

So do your bit for the bay and eat them. They taste like gummy...

Which means only boat anglers and divers can keep ONE banjo per angler under 1.5 metres wide. Pier / land based anglers are out of luck.

The new rules will:
 Prohibit the take or possession of stingrays, skates or guitarfish greater than 1.5 metres in wide
 Reduce the combined daily bag limit for rays, skates and guitarfish less than 1.5 metres wide from 5 to 1
 Prohibit the take of these species within 400 metres of any pier, jetty, wharf or breakwater
 Require these species to be landed whole so they can be measured by Fisheries Officers.

NO mention of length ? only width... so does this mean any banjo under 1.5 metres in width can be kept ? which would be 99 % of bajo's...

In all seriousness its frigen disheartening when you're on the water constantly re-baiting and untangling rods becaudse of these mutts. I really don't understand why the hell they would be protected.

Out of anger and frustration I was very close from 'taking things into my own hands' but lucky common sense prevailed.

Mmm sounds like a touchof lack of experience to me imo
Would not bother with a burly cage ( they attract to may sh.t fish).
Catch some fresh salmon ,trev, pike, yakka ect cut into chunk baits and have baits sitting about a half to meter off bottom.

Ussaly gummy will get scent first b4 stingrays.

Stingrays r apart of fizhing...no biggie.

Not using burley I have heard of, keeping the baits that high off the bottom I haven’t. And yes I am definitely inexperienced in gummy fishing, I haven’t ever even caught one!
