So for confusion when I said a combo for beach and boat I meant one of each not something I could use in both.

So would there be any difference in getting a rod paired with an overhead reel or a spinner or they pretty do the same thing?

I use 10-15kg spin outfits. I was very nearly spooled by a gigantic ray last Saturday night. We caught 3 gummies in the sub 4kg range but this ray took me nearly down to steel on 50lb and a qtr turn off locked drag on a 10,000 saragosa. I tested the drag after the fish and it would have been around 7kg of drag. There's no way I could have put this force on with a cheaper outfit.

my pick would be 10kg rod with a abu 7000

try this, doesnt cost to much and flexible for a smaller gummys and big ones
just caught 82cm elephant shark on it and handles fine
also had 16 ounces of sinkers when fishing for 50cm flathead at bermagui in a 15 knot winds, best rod i had for that weather

so i bought 2 -10 to 15 kg rods and 3 - 24 kg rods
the 24 kg ones held up fine to 12kg stripies

Sorry to hijack the thread. Ducky did you manage to bring the ray up, or did you have to cut line?

At the end of the day mate use 10-15kg sticks, 8-10k size reels, and 30lb braid or 25lb mono.

All the charter operators do this. Hook a 120kg Eagle ray on anything smaller and prepare to be spooled or snap your rod.

Enough said...

And in terms of rod length. A 11-12ft rod for the surf, and something around 7-7.5ft for the boat.

Caught a 25-30kg gummy about two weeks ago on a 6-10kg rod, sustain 6000 with 20lb powerpro,60lb leader, whole setup worked great, had it in the boat in around 15mins from 12m of water, dropped another earlier on a 10-15kg setup so couldn't really tell the difference

It took about 30 mins but I got him boat side. Wing gaffed it and got the hooks out. Vicious bloody tail on this one too.

I don't know if this link will even work.
