Middle Brighton pier tonight

Post by kitchenwench » Sun Dec 30, 2012 2:06 pm

Just spoke with my man and he's agreed to my request for us to hit Middle Brighton pier this evening - YAY! I think high tide is around 3-4am? Too late for us since we leave early for a road trip tomorrow morning so we're planning on just practicing our casting from about 8pm onwards :P

If anyone knows the area, can they recommend whether we should be using hard bodies or soft plastics if we're to have any sort of chance of catching anything other than seaweed salad tonight? :P I'm off to Coles to get some banana prawns to use as bait since the pilchards we got from the 7/11 last time we were there were utter rubbish (so soft they wouldn't stay on the hook, disintegrated almost as soon as they hit the water)

No squidding yet since I still haven't had time to go to the Ringwood Compleat Angler store to get some new squid jigs :(

I'd go soft plastics, worm or minnow, on a 1/2 oz or heavier jig head, as you'll have 1m-1.5m swell and 20km/h Southerly's
I'd come down but low tide is at 8pm, and I've already been out today, so I can pass, too cold, too windy too many spikes on flathead.

I'd probably take the lazy approach and drop shot a soft plastic for flathead, so I wouldn't have to do anything ;D

Just remember, small hooks can still catch big fish :crazy:

cast HB or catch small mullets and use them as live bait for the big snooks hanging around that pier.

Thanks FishSamFish! Kmart is right next to Coles so I'll check out what soft plastics they have! And I'd be happy to catch a flathead - it's still a fish! And it'd help me stop considering myself to be a seaweed magnet :down:

Fish-Cador - I think live-baiting is well beyond our skill level at the moment, but there is a small collection of HB in the kit so we'll give those a try too. Thank you! :) Hopefully we'll actually catch something and I'll be able to report back on success rather than failure :fish7:

I edit'ed the link c;

I use DOA plastics for cast retrieve, I bought the #345 but, I would rather the #354 (see below link)

In MY opinion, shad's (with the tail like the ones above) are easier to use, as the action is basically inbuilt with the lure, when you reel in, or jerk the rod, the tail will vibrate, back and forth, allowing you to lift the lure, let it sink, wind, lift, sink wind, and the action occurs by it'self c:

*SIGH*

Well, we got there at 8pm, set up and started fishing - the toadies were aggressive as hell tonight! Caught and released three of the little guys, but it was freezing cold and we packed it in by 10pm. The mob next to us packed it up at the same time as they got hit bad by sea lice so all in all not the best night.

Ah well, we're hitting Bostock Reservoir and Lake Wendouree on our way to Daylesford tomorrow with our new Gulp squidgies and trout bait so hopefully better luck then!

Keep at it no doubt your luck will turn, maybe fresh water might bring you better luck
