Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of southern/eastern school or sand whiting being caught in the docklands/PPB before? From my reading, neither of their ranges includes PPB. But, a friend and another guy managed to catch a couple at the docklands yesterday and I’ve seen them on fish brain too.

Is it the case that they are pushing higher in the bay like rock cod due to the cold water temperatures?

Any wisdom welcome! Great bait to catch either way.

few years ago now but there were heaps being caught around the westgate bridge landbased. like we r talking huge numbers but haven't seen numbers like that since up north. they get them early snapper season off the channels at clifton springs. in terms of recent i caught a couple landbased at williamstown as by catch.

Used to get them in the Yarra at Newport where the old ferry came in along the wall

Always sand whiting around Geelong in Spring. Taste great too

Yeah, Cunningham pier is a popular spot for chasing the sand whiting.

Clifton Springs from the rockwalls can be alright for both sand and kgw, it is a solid mix of eel grass and sandy bottoms.

I will keep and eye out for when I am back in Docklands from tomorrow.

I fish light at docklands a couple of times a week and usually just get a bunch of bream/pinkies, plus the odd mullet and trevally. never seen whiting around (though if somebody tells me they're around in numbers i'll go straight out and target them lol). granted i tend to use prawn or chicken rather than more specific whiting baits but i did once drop some bass yabbies down (gun whiting bait) and never got a touch.

If you want to catch school whiting, use these sabiki rigs. Use a small piece of squid on them. To be legal you cut the rigs in half to make a rig with just two hooks. Lightest sinker you can get away with.

Got that off one of the piers in Williamstown before the lockdown kicked in. Was pretty surprised at the bycatch - enough to take a pic and send it to a few mates with a wtf

Juvenile King George sloth. School Whiting are a more sandy orange colour than the gold of KG, KG also have numerous dark round spots on the upper half of the body in a kind of randomised pattern where School Whiting have a lot of randomised almost orange blotches across the upper half. KG are slime machines, School aren't so bad

Got some fishing off Geelong with the kids 5 years ago.
Great bait for snapper and squid prongs.
