Squid at the spit 27/6/20
Went to the spit yesterday to look for squid and whiting, me and a mate on a kayak. Long way from the launching spot, but oh what a day yesterday.
Time fished : 10am-3pm.
Moon : 40%
Tide : low 1pm
Wind : around 5km or less, with the odd 10km gusts
Barometer : 1028 steady
Water : crystal clear 11.5°C
Gear : squid rod 832, 2000 reel, 10lb braid, 10lb fluorocarbon leader. 1-3kg nibble tip rod, 2000 reel, 6lb line, with pipis bait and gotcha burley for whiting.
Jigs : Harimitsu red, Yamashita white, Yamashita orange, Egixile white. 2.5-3.0 size.
Water was crystal clear. I could see the bottom with naked eyes, even in 5m water.
Glass like water with barely any wind. A bit of cloud now and then, otherwise sunny.
I caught two squid and my mate caught one around 11am in 3-4m water on white jig 2.5. We knew it was gonna be hard in that condition, hence the white colour jig. Any natural colour usually works in crystal clear water, especially on a clear day and no wind.
Then gone super quiet til 2pm.
Whole day I didn't get even a nibble on the bait rod. The same pipi i put on was still there til I packed.
Moved to deeper water 6-7m where it's darker a bit. I caught two squid on red 3.0 jig for the deeper water and my mate caught one on orange jig. No special technique just gotta let the jig drifting with the slow current down deep almost to the bottom. Slower retrieve too.
Then my mate saw something on the sounder every time I burleyed. He put on zman slim swimz bad shad and caught three 30cm flathead. One of them chased the plastic all the way to mid water and spewed a bait fish almost identical to the zman slim swimz. No special technique either, pretty much let the plastic get to the bottom and wait, long pause before the next lift lift pause.
It's worth to burley and pay attention to the sounder.

Re: Squid at the spit 27/6/20
Considering you fished 10-3 pm you did well.
If you wanna bag out on squid you just need to fish last or so of light in arvi.

Yup. Not bhed.
Had to drop mrs at work and pick her up. So couldn't get the sunrise/sunset.
Yes, pretty happy with the result considering the timing etc.

Re: Squid at the spit 27/6/20
Nice also interesting your friend had a flat one throw something that looked like a bad shad, maybe a small bait fish?
This is what the zman bad shad looks like for those that dont know plastics.

Re: Squid at the spit 27/6/20
Yup, white coloured bait fish and a little dark on the back.
Almost identical to that zman slim swimz bad shad.
I forgot to mention, but i tried the usual flatty plastic such as curly grub and nemesis on pumpkin seeds colour to the same spot, no success. Yet my mate caught three.
