Gotta take mrs for an appointment so might as well late start work.

Told my boss I'd start work late, out of the house 4:15am, got on the water 5am.
Very low northwest wind, glass condition.
Peak high tide 5:45am. Moon 32%. Barometer 1022 steady.

Dropped the heavy outfit hoping to catch a gummy while still dark. Nothing...

Moved to a weed bed just after first light, prepared the NS Black Water 702 egi rod casting rate 1.5-2.5 and felt a squid 'snag' then off, wasn't sure what it was til I saw the slime on the red 2.5 squid jig. Threw to the same spot with less drag and on! 20cm hood squid.

I'm so use to Solpara 832EL casting rate 2.0-3.5, this NS Black Water feels so stiff/fast. It has the squid rod action on the tip section but the mid isn't as soft as solpara. Maybe because its a shorter rod?

When netting the squid, it's mate came (probably a pair), I had the Black Water rod and the squid jig in the water and it got hit. Thump thump. I pulled and I ripped out of it straight away, it came back, same story. It felt like the rod was so stiff and bounced back really quickly and ripped the tentacles.
I checked the drag, and it was set on really low drag.

NS Black Water egi rod isn't a cheap rod, it's nice and light, feels good to hold. But this 702 seems like a stiff soft plastic rod than an egi rod.
Is short egi rod suppose to be like that?
What's your boat/kayak egi rod? Any of them that is soft medium action?

Oh, no other action apart from that. Back home at 10am for mrs' appointment and work at 11am.

On the egi rods , , , , I don't have any specific egi rods, but seen how flexible they are, can be, and I do understand the logic. I use General Purpose Rods from 5 - 6 foot through to 8 foot from the Beach, Rocks. They do have a flexible top part but nowhere near the flexibility of those egi rods. I don't get too many drop offs but I think what gets me better results are the Squid Jigs that I use. I mostly use decent cheapy ones, which normally have slightly larger and longer prongs and thus better grab on the squid. I have had some fancy ones (the rattle ones in blue work a treat) and I take more care in bringing in the Squid as they have dropped off from time to time.

The Blackwater EGI is a stiffer rod than what i am used to.
i prefer a nice soft tip and a parabolic curve.
the shorter 762L blackwater was heavier in hand than my Emeraldas 83ML
i sold mine due to not using it.

i dont know if any of the manufacturers make a shorter squid rod thats nice and soft, unless ofcourse you come across a feeling shaft 762L

i would use a noodle SP rod if you want the shorter models on the yak.
many guys here use the 8'3 size on the yaks, i personally wouldnt like it and theres no way you can perform actions you can on a boat unless standing up on the yak.

The squid jig is important to get a hookup as well as the rod action. But during the fight, I find the parabolic soft shock absorbent of the rod is critical. Feels like the NS Black Water 702 is a bit too rough and harsh for the squid's delicate tentacles. My Solpara egi rod 832 is much friendlier (gentler).

Yes I prefer soft parabolic rod for squid.
It has the right action when 'twitching' but not happy with it during the hookup and fight. Way too stiff.

8ft3 on a yak sounds like creating unnecessary hassle. Yeah, either won't be able to maximize the action or too far to reach without bending the rod too much.

Wondering if there's soft parabolic egi rod that is less than 8ft.

Long rods and kayaks are great .

It hasn't been a nude beach for years. The council banned/changed it.
Not that I'll be fishing nude in this cold weather. All I'd catch be cold and flu. Lol.
