Flinders 11/06/2018
Hi all!
Family trip for the long weekend down there just to chill, with a few family friends. Last day we got tired of just lounging around in the RACV spa so the guys went fishing while the ladies went shopping. We turned up at around 1:30pm, and it was windy as hell. We kept getting bites but no hookups so we downsized hooks until they were the size of a staple, which resulted in 4 2kg Leatheries and a few grass whiting.
I got bored of bait fishing so i switched over to a soft plastic in an attempt to tempt some red mullet and/or trevs. Using a zman 3.75streakz in shiner first cast I let it hit the bottom, then the triple hop. On the second triple hop, it felt like I picked up some weed, so I kept the rod tip high and began slowly reeling in. About halfway back in, I noticed the tip of the rod was nodding slightly, but there weren't any head shakes, so I still believed it to be weed. As the placcy gets in sight, there was a burst of black ink and the drag on my rod screamed and the 'weed' began making some runs. I had somehow hooked a squid. After 10 minutes of nerves and a feeling of good luck, the squid was netted in and boy was it a kraken. 47cm hood!!!
I had somehow managed to pierce one of its candles during the triple hops. By then it was nearing sundown, and it was getting rather chilly so we packed up and left. We had a smashing dinner of cala rings, squid tacos and squid salad.
Gear used: 8lb braid, 15lb mono leader, 1/6th oz jig head, zman streakz 3.75inch in shiner
+ 8lb braid. 10lb mono leader, 1oz ball sinker, paternoser rig, size ??? (staple size) hooks with peeled prawns.
Cheers!

I don't have any pics without a face in it and I would prefer to keep my identity private. I tried drawing over the face but that made the file size too bigLightningx wrote:Sounds like you were very lucky to land that one mate!

That's a beast mate. Well done.
I had a fair fight on a 43cm. I can't believe how you didn't realise this was a squid until the very end.
