Flinders report 29/8/18

Post by aussie_fisho » Fri Aug 31, 2018 1:34 pm

Just a late report seeing as I haven’t posted anything in a while.

Launched at stony point at 7am and made our way down towards flinders, calm conditions the whole way down which was a bonus. Once close we proceeded to troll around for some fresh bait, after spending a good 40mins to an hour with out a touch we decided to just anchor on our mark and try the first couple of hours of the run in for a gummy. After a couple hours go by with out a touch, I decide to head out a little deeper off flinders bank, we drift around the 30-40m mark for some flathead and try find some sandy/muddy ground. After picking up some decent flathead, some wrasse and a draughtboard we finally hook up onto something decent, both the new rods start peeling line, after a short fight we see a nice gummy make her way up from the depths, wrapped up in 2 lines on the way up. Even tho I didn’t technically hook the fish and my mate did, I think it’s fair to say we both landed this one . After that action the wind changed and we decided to head in for some squid around flinders, where our engine decided to cut out and not start, and the anchor wouldn’t hold bottom along with it. So we slowly made our way towards the rocks which resulted in us having to jump out in the cold water and push the boat around the reef into deeper water  . Wouldn’t be a normal trip if something didn’t go wrong. After that little issue and fixing the motor once again we decided to head back in after a long cold day.

Cheers aussie

Great read and a nice gummy. I have had to go in the water off cape woolami 1year due to line wrapped around the prop was it the captain or a volunteer. I now carry a towel you never know.

Interesting day out lol.
Did you weigh the gummy looks about 13kg?

Yeah was quite a struggle ended up taking us a good 20mins to push it to a clear sandy patch off the reef. And we had an issue with one of the filters cracking and allowing air into the fuel, ended up using a pen as repalcement for the time being. I assume that was the main issue, but I’m sure I need to fix up a few more things.

We didn’t get the chance before we cleaned it and the rush to get back home, I’d say it was about 13kg but my mates keep claiming it’s a bit more.
