As in Flinders pier?
Go for squid.

You can get fish, but to me it's not worth it. Waaay too weedy and thick weed and kelp, the ones that'll break your line rig etc often.
Some people fish with float, catching trevally or grass whiting. Use the grass whiting for squid (as a bait on a prong).
Sometimes garfish at the beginning of the pier.

But I'd say go for squid for sure. Any sides of the pier can produce squid. Good luck!

Fishing at Flinders... sucks.
Squidding is a bit better, but the crowds can be terrible.

Seen plenty of nice squid caught from that pier.

I think crowds anywhere at the moment are pretty chaotic, Friday night and weekends are getting hammered.

Maybe the state government could start building a few new piers around the bay , can’t be too costly I wouldn’t have thought. I’ve been to Flinders a couple of times and didn’t enjoy it at all, packed to the rafters.

You can get whiting there if that's what you're targetting.

If I were to look for whiting around that area, I'd rather fish off the beach of Sommers/Balnarring.

Just as Sebb says you can get whiting there at Flinders and I’ve done ok in the past away from the pier to the north ( kayak fishing though ) my guess the beach along there would also be worth a try If nothing else I would get you away from the pier crowd
