Mornington 12/01/2020 (underwater video)

Post by eddyt » Sun Jan 12, 2020 9:14 pm

Here's a video under the pier. Red filter added this time, made a huge difference to the colour balance. See how many different types of fish you can spot! Heaps of fish around but not really taking baits.

Also a quick report from Mornington pier today in the late afternoon. I was targeting small bait fish (yakkas, slimeys) on light gear with 2x small hooks baited with small pieces of prawn. Was holding on to the rod moving around up and down when the line went slack, strike and I was onto something which felt like a small yakka. I reeled it up slowly thinking it was just a small fish, but just when I could see colour, a silver flash came shooting up from the depths and grabbed on! Small fish turned to big, the reel was screaming and the fish fighting left to right. A short fight and up came the distinct yellow tail and squiggles on the body of a good size mackerel.

Saw a few other yakkas get caught, the usual pinkies, but nothing big. No squid around.

And here's the mackerel. DIdn't measure it but guessing it would have been around 35-40cm. Don't usually see them this big so it was a good surprise.

Also suggest skipping the first minute of the video if you get motion sickness - the rest of it's pretty calm though.

Nice mackerel.
Pretty cool video. Did you just tie the camera on a line and drop it?

I don't actually remember. It's just leftover bait chopped up, like pilchards and pippi but there's quite a few things mixed in. Take all your bait home and turn it into burley.

Yeah Mackerel are awesome fish. They fight harder than snapper and go left and right like trevally but they give up after a minute or so.

Filmed with a GoPro in an underwater case. i like to think it's a bit more sophisticated than just a camera on a line - I've got a giant snap swivel on the line too :te:

Thinking of hanging a sinker under the go pro? To stabilise the camera during the drop. Who knows, might work.

Always thinking of how to make it better! Sinker would work but I think it's working ok now though (I'm not great at building things). I think it's actually pretty cool sometimes when the camera faces down on the drop. Otherwise i can just cut out that part of the video next time.

Doesn't have to be very complicated. Make it a simple DIY.
Something like this. The heavier the sinker the better as it will keep the line tight and not moving around much.
