Mt Martha - 14/01 - Kayak

Went out early in the morning, aiming to be on the water by 6. Plan was to chase some snapper with some squid/soft plastics, then head in for squid/whiting.

Launched from the south end of Mt Martha beach, and paddled about 3.5km out to about 20m of water. Heaps of bait fish schools passed along the way on the sounder. Fished for awhile with no luck there so moved on further south. No luck here either with the snapper, but ended up on a hot bite of flathead. At first I was throwing them back, but in the end I gave up and decided to fish the spot. Kept 10 fish but probably caught a total 25+. Largest at 38cm on soft plastics.

Ended up sticking around there for a little too long, so headed in towards the cliffs to search for squid as fresh bait for another day out. Drifted all the way down to the hearn rd area before finally getting onto some. 4 caught in about half an hour, all in only about 2-3m of water. Smallest hood at about 18-20cm, largest at 26cm.

Would love some suggestions for spots for KGW or Snapper ~ paddling out 3km before even starting to fish was a bit of a drag but a good workout. Covered about 12km total for the day. Also suggestions on cleaning squid ink from the kayak... one of the squid was definitely not happy about his situation.

Looks like a good session.

3km isn’t that far, you just need practice. Why bother cleaning ink off the yak? Ideally it’ll just get inked again and you’ll be back at square one.

Well done!
Not the species you want but hey gotta be happy with those flatties and squid.
The big snapper is a bit harder in mid summer usually. Try mussel farm or oyster farm, cant remember exactly. In Mornington. Heard of consistent pinkie/snapper there. I don't know where it is though, lol.

Launch at fishies beach and turn left around the point, head south south west and you'll see it. It's smack in the middle of Mornington and mount martha

Ah thanks!
And what to look? A marker? Buoy? Or literally a net full of mussels/oysters?

Wham, we shall organise a yak fishing trip there at some point.

A bunch of plastic drums floating in the water with ropes hanging off them

Would be good to have some company! I've hit up the mussel farm a few times, but haven't had any luck on the kayak there. Would probably need to get some kind of light so that I can get out earlier in the mornings.

I made a light on stick for my kayak, cost me about $10.

I find the Mussell Farm hit and miss, but I've done well heading out about 4k's in front of the Morno pier in about 21metres.
Most annoying part is how long it takes to pedal back :-D
