Burleying?

Happy to admit I am a very, very novice squid fisherman? Is Berleying for squid practical? I know they rely on camorflage and their terrific eye sight to ambush pray, not really sure how their sense of smell is though?

I'm fishing cleeland bight for them Saturday sunrise. I'll be using 3-4 floated grass whiting, and a jig. Is it worth to drift with all them (hopefully tide isn't ripping through there) or just anchor on a grass patch and hopefully the squid come lol

I have found that having tuna oil slick out while drifting, clears the water visibility and you can see squid chasing ur jigs.

Often catch squid while kgw fishing at anchor...

IMO I don't think burly does much for squid.

Never hurts to try though.

I use squid jigs as burley. By the time i lose 5 to the snags the squid start biting. Lol

I've experimented a few times with burleying in the past. Can't say I've ever managed to burley up a shoal of squid...They do have a keen sense of smell but maybe they just use this when they grab prey? Dunno. Some think attracting bait fish will bring them in. Personally I would drift and anchor up when you find them.

If your anchored...berley, have a cage midwater/just off bottom with fish frames or pilchards. Ive also used this technique when drifting off stleonards, had the cage down with a sleeper jig next to it and also worked a couple of jigs with the one near the berley getting 8 out of the 10 squid. In saying this I rarely do this whilst drifting just wanted to experiment.
Good luck on saturday

I fish from a boat. I find drifting down pillie chunks whilst i have a prong out the back to be effective.

I fish for leatherjacket whilst the squid are playing. Great feed.

Have heard yays and nays as to whether burleying for squid is beneficial. Some say they solely rely on their eyesight, and have no sense of smell. Interesting that baited jigs can sometimes take more than artificials. Interesting that arrow squid are often attracted to your boat when burleying for makos out wide. Personally I can't see why tuna oil bottle hanging over the side with a hole or 2 in it could be a bad thing.
I've found a moving jig is a better way to go. You can either anchor up and simply let the floated jig drift from the boat in the current, until it's a fair distance away, reel in, and start the process again. Or, drift. A rising tide is better from my experiences. Let us know how you go!
