Post by Sebb » Mon Jul 13, 2020 6:58 pm

Squid and calamari, is it like :

Cow and beef?

Or

Cilantro and coriander?

Or is it just the Italian word for squid?

Afaik Calamari is just the culinary name for squid, like cow and beef.
I don't think calamari is italian, the italian word for squid is calamaro or seppia

I'm not Italian but I think calamaro is singular and plural is calamari.

I thought so too, but then the species is called southern calamari and not southern squid.

Calamari goes back to the Latin and evolved into the Italian and Greek over time.
Calamari and Arrow are Squid, there are a number of sub species but a Squid is a Squid.
Maybe Calamari sounds better in a restaurant?

Squid is a broader term, Calamari refers to specific species of squid.

Someone broke it down on FB a few days ago, I can dig out the specifics if you want.

Squid are the general type of animal, part of the cephalopd group. Apparently cuttlefish are technically squid, but octopus and nautilus are not.

Here calamari most commonly refers to the southern calamari (aka southern reef squid) species, as opposed the arrow squid which is the other common species. However you will probably find that 'calamari' sold in fish and chip shops is mostly not Southern Calamari and actually either locally caught arrow squid or something imported from SE Asia.

Overseas calamari is the name given to any kind of squid used in food, more like the cow/squid and beef/calamari example above.
