Sorrento squid and whiting 12-13/9/22
Sorrento squid and whiting 12-13/9/22
Headed out for squid last Monday morning around 9am from Rye and started fishing a drop off near Tyrone boat ramp and managed 2 small squid on jigs then moved to the “Sisters” at Sorrento then bagged out on squid on size 3-4 jigs. Dark natural colours worked well.
Squid ranged from 15-45cm hoods and at Sorrento was fishing between 3.5-5.5m deep. Wind was pushing from the SSW.
Drove back to the boat ramp at 11.25am then started using micro jigs in the shallows near Rye pier and hooked 4-5 small salmon and kept 1 for bait.
After having never bagged out on squid in my boat, I decided to head out again on Tuesday in the same area with the forecast being better than the previous day. Launched around 10am and headed straight for the “Sisters” in 3.5m with 3 sleeper jigs and one rod that I was casting. Started catching 2 smallish(15cm hood) squid after 20min but with considerably more boat traffic than the previous day(was the only trailer in the car park), I decided to fish deeper.
After moving, I decided to fish the same area but start my drift in 8m and finishing in 13m. Fishing size 3-4.0 jigs, some with an extended paternoster rig with a small weight to get it down, I ended up bagging out on squid to 35cm with 3 and 2 way hook ups on decent sized models.
After bagging out on squid I decided to fish the “Sisters” for whiting, where previously I’ve bricked out on them completely. I found a nice sand patch in 4m with rocks and small patches of weed roughly 20 square meters in size. Armed with fresh squid, I removed the snaps from my sleeper rod paternoster squid jig set ups and tied on a long shank and a light mutu circle. Tentacle on each hook and I caught 3 whiting to 33cm within 10 minutes. Bite slowed down after I dropped a couple of fish and then I ended up catching another 8 to 40 odd cm before I left and cleaned them at Rye pier. Also caught half a dozen Port Jackson sharks, few toadies and a banjo whilst whiting fishing.
Not a whizz on posting pics on here but Mitcham Angling club has posted a couple of the pics on their FB page.
Tight lines, Shaz

Great job man. Seems like the bigger models have finally arrived.

Yees, I would say that’s very likely!purple5ive wrote: ↑Mon Sep 19, 2022 10:06 pmGreat job man. Seems like the bigger models have finally arrived.
Took my boat out for a squirt the previous Saturday(10/9) afternoon from Stony with the intention to fish Flinders but ended up fishing near Hastings for squid. Wind and tide and rain were against me so I ended up launching at Rye on the way home and only caught 2 smallish squid and 1 arrow in an hr of being on the water. Was fishing near Tyrone boat ramp in 4-10m.
Have recently being mostly fishing for species that are in season and for the most part it’s has been proving successful.
Cheers Shaz

Re: Sorrento squid and whiting 12-13/9/22
Thanks man.
Time to start the search then
I love chasing these big squid this time of the year..
Yeah seasonal fishing is a lot more productive.
XOS squid and salmon for me this time of the year flowed by the snapper soon.
Whiting has generally been a miss for me many a time, but I'll get there, don't spend enough time on them yet.

Awesome hearing that mate, sounds like you've had some ripper sessions!
Keen to see what you get up too when this weather warms!
