Anyway, decided yesterday to venture down to Blairgowrie to target some squid. The wind was there but averaging around 12knt when I arrived just prior to 9pm. As the night wore on the wind subsequently abated, making fishing favorable with the high tide as I had begun fishing.
I find anything in a South-South/Westerly direction makes for good casting.
It was fairly quiet to begin with, I hadn't seen anything caught between the ten or so people there and coupled with some divers in areas I considered prime made it more challenging. Around 9:30pm I saw my nanofil line dart off quickly while the squid jig was on the decent so a quick tug at the rod and up came a squid. However it latched onto the side and wasn't actually hooked so I jigged it again but it released backwards and the prongs only caught the tip of a small tentacle. I was in for a very slim chance of hoisting it up and as I did, it tentacle pulled through and back in the drink it went :wave2:
A few moments would pass before I would catch it's equivalent (possibly the same one lol). This time I swapped to a sized 2.5 Deep Shimano jig in black and up it came. I actually don't bother with measuring as I'm to keen to get it back out there but it gives you a rough idea..
Not long after had I spotted a decent (kg+ version) on the Marina side so in went my jig and BAM! But it as quickly as it happened, it abruptly ended with the tentacle barely latching on which was frustrating. The squid came back a couple of times but never went for anything I threw at it. Three good sized pike did the 'rounds but wasn't interested in the soft plastics I threw in so I made the most of the high tide and hit the shallow end. When I arrived another fisho had a similar sized squid I had landed and after a few casts, I seemed to have found them..
..three in three casts and then nothing. I tried numerous colours and swapped between sized 2.5 and 3.0 jigs for zilch. At 12am, my torch said good night so I returned to the car and ready to go home, until I realised I had another battery! So I thought I best make the most of it and donned the waders, grabbed my underwater LED light, spear and hit the shallows. Just under two hrs later, I was truly stuffed! And still had to drive home
I ended up with another three small squid, taking the tally up to seven along with two small gars and a decent one. Long but good night!
