Launched 6am Paynesville yesterday and motored out to X marks a previous spot on the 6 mile only to find that Lakes Charter (plus 1 other) had got out before us...of course LC being an Early Bird an all. So shifted about 200 m to their NE and fished a random spot on the reef; random on account that the new Lowrance Elite sounder hadnt been dialled in as we (well the boat owner ...He) had very little idea as to how to set it up effectively... but its a learning procss right?. So although we could see the bottom nothing much else was showing. Anyway fished 7 am till about 10 am and caught 2 snapper 47 & 55 8 pinkies around the 38 -40 mark ,a small morwong same size, and a flatty whilst drifting in 22m during the last hr. Squid seemed to be the preference . Quite a swell going all morning so both ended up nearly chucking and the return across the Lakes Bar during a strong ebb was quite ..errr ....sporty! Noticed a few boats out on the Nyerimilang bank, hopefully a KGW or two showed up for em. Shall give the KGW a go over the next few days, more in desperation than hope, before heading off overseas agan in a few weeks. Always nice to get afloat on the lakes though whatever the outcome, especially after international travel, which only highlights the beauty and relative tranquility of what we have here in East Gippsland.

In Scotland at the moment. Home in June. Hope there are still some fish around
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Briefly. Launched Paynesville 0600 yesterday and headed out offshore. Entrance was calm- looking good but our piscatorial destination depended on the height and direction of the swell. And it was swelly...predominantly from the SW ...so it was straight out onto the 6 mile. Unusually for us the sounder showed some activity in 36m , so anchor down ,and 2 hrs later we had bagged out (+1 returned) on Pinkies with a few nudging 45 - all on paternoster pilly and squid. 3 leather jackets and a few random reef fish added to the bite rate. 0930 saw us move inshore lookng for a gummy & flatties for the last few hrs, but only couple of flathead put in an appearance ...and that was it. Catch ratio about 50/50 ...but I am not so keen on the smaller ones ,as difficult to fillet (normally goujoned) so I only took these 7. Last nights snapper goujons in joghurt and panko oven baked highly recommended.
So if you are afloat this weekend I highly recommend a trip outto 6 mile and the rest is up to you!

Time to break my silence - two recent trips. Visited the usual KGW spots for zero apart from a 47 cm Dusky on a whiting rig at Fraser Is. Far more successful was a trip outside yesterday with 7 good keeper Flathead drifting from 15 to 22 metres not far from the entrance. Bait was pillies and squid. As soon as the gentle breeze (and the drift) stopped the Flatties went off as well. Boat was U/S for some time as the required length replacement steering cable was on back order - now fixed! Yesterday I had a linkage problem with being unable to go faster than 6 knots (thus fishing close to the entrance). Now checked and hopefully fixed!

G'day all if anybody goes offshore from Lakes and catches some snapper if you come across this orange fat on the fillets do not throw them out last two times I've been out I've come across it so got in contact with somebody I know in the professional fishing industry down at lakes they had it tested it is Sky High in omega 3's and a result of something on the reef that they are eating at the moment they do taste a little different but by no means is that off putting.

Managed another 5 decent Flatties yesterday but was hard going. Outboard not running smoothly - time for a carburetor service!

Managed another 5 decent Flathead yesterday but was hard going - was blowing 10 knots plus and keeping the drift down was a problem.
