Looking for whiting.

Post by re-tyred » Tue Oct 20, 2020 12:47 pm

Decided to go early this morning before the easterly freshened, and see if the KGW were here yet. Short answer is no. Water is still a bit cold. Around 15c but getting there. All was not invane though. An hour in the channel off Nungurner produced 10 school whiting. I kept 8 of them that were large enough to fillet. Moved on down to the whiting bank off Fraser Island. Immediately had a good bite and a bit off a fight. Turned out to be a double header of small salmon. They both got off as I tried to get them in. Oh well, changed to a vibe and had a bit of fun. The area was full of them. Kept 4 to convert to flathead/snapper next trip off shore. Killed and bled 2 others for a snack. With Salmon around I headed down to the entrance to look for some bigger ones. It was a bit washy on my usual haunt close to the beach. Flicked a couple of lures into the area but not touches. Decided it was a bit to difficult there due to the waves, so headed home for morning tea.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

School whiting are as good if not better, but they are small and fiddly to eat. A bit like eating gars.

Recreational fishers often call them silver whiting. There are a couple of slightly different types.

Can be confusing. Bit like slightly different flathead types, with confusing local names.
There are two places in the lake where they get pretty thick. Bit of an art to catching them.

I've been informed there's been a change to an exam I had coming up so it looks like I've got a few days to go looking for them too. Hopefully there's some gars around too, I don't know how much longer my tub of maggots will last.

Find a road kill & give it to them
P.s. - they eat rotten flesh, not fresh stuff

I've got a freezer full of rotting flesh thanks to an accident with a power plug 2 weeks ago lol
