We headed into Gippsland this long weekend to see if we could get some bream fishing done off the kayak.
Its been ages since I took the Hobie out or even fished for Bream in a serious way.
This time without Alex to guide, i decided that it was time I try and really focus on the task at hand.
Its been about 3 years now, since I started kayaking and Lure fishing actively and its really been a steep learning curve.
Some of the questions\challenges I had are as below :
- understanding wind\weather and how it reflects on the kayaking
- understanding how this effects the fishing and direction in which to tackle a system
- understanding what scenarios to use what lures
- understanding how fish move at different times of the year, what they feed on
- how do river mouths opening and closing effect estuaries
- why do i pull hooks on soo many fish ?
- Why do i have a dismal hook up rate on surface lures?
- How long a leader do i run?
- When casting a really light lure , am I even loading the road appropriately on the cast?
- Can i navigate well, retrieve and launch safely after dark?
- How fast can i tie a leader knot that wont fail me?
- When to use , what jighead?
-Correctly rigging plastics
- How important is it to have consistent leader lengths? What lb leaders do i run?
- Replacement treble selection, what clip should i be using?
- How to use the god damn sounder, dropping marks, sounding edges, is that a fish?
- Retrieving too fast? Too slow?
The more I think about it , the more questions I can think off...
Slowly though, mostly out of learning from the likes of Alex, Niroj , Anth , P5 and the likes.. I have slowly gotten more confident in what I am doing
Bream probably are the wiliest of the bunch(apart from jewies), there is a reason that they are hard to catch on lures. And I dont think it was about the lures themselves or the place and time. Its a test of angling discipline.
Day 1 of fishing , i had small fish. my usual results, and i was thinking to myself that it was time to step my game up.
Day 2 and 3 , i made sure my leaders were consistently long, i rotated lures. Dropped marks and returned to what I thought were likely spots.
Set out paddling with a clear plan in my head on what my drifts would be, what area of the lake I would hit in what order.
I had more consecutive legals on day 2/3 then I had ever previously.
The systems in Gippy are great for growing in confidence in oneself. Larger number of quality fish that are far less skiddish.
Great for practice. Hopefully this marks the start of more bream in my life.
Also new PB Flathead of 80cm that smacked a small wakebait in about 5 inch of water, had me jump of the kayak and kick it out of weed beds.
it had the lure down deep and i got it in with shavings left on the 6lb leader. FC Rock for life.
More learning for the Summer and a 3rd species PB broken for the season.
