BLUE-GREEN algae levels in the Gippsland Lakes have declined and in most areas people can have contact with the water again.
Signs around the Lakes system warning people to not have contact with the water will be removed but the Health Department is still advising people not to eat mussels, prawns and crabs caught in the area.
According to a Department of Sustainability and Environment statement this afternoon, signs will be removed from Lakes Entrance, Metung and Paynesville.
But signs will remain at Bunga Arm, Ocean Grange and Steamer Landing, where levels are still well above the triggers to protect human health.
Signs warning against the consumption of mussels, prawns and crabs will stay in place until tests show toxin levels have dropped.
Fish can be eaten from the system but only if the gills and guts are removed before cooking. :super: :super: :r
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.
