Estuary perch

Post by re-tyred » Sun Jan 15, 2012 6:31 am

Had a good day yesterday. My youngest son and I managed 6 estuary perch largest being 1.5kg smallest just on 1kg. Just land based fishing around the rocks in the entrance channel. Lost another 4, the buggers dive straight under a rock as soon as you hook up. :fishing:
pic of my son with one.

There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

After looking through many fish ID sites, I believe they may be Wirrah Cod (Acanthistius serratus). Same shape different colouring, also found them called kelp Perch. Either way they were good fun to catch.

thats what i thawt, those wirrah cod fight hard and dirty, caught them at eden right up in the rocks
You know when they have a fishing show on TV? They catch the fish and then let it go. They don't want to eat the fish, they just want to make it late for something.

They are described as being tough eating. I filleted and skun them. Found them to be firm white flesh, mild fish taste. Pretty much taste like whatever you cook them in. I am going to try smoking them if I get any more. They are a bit of a wrestling match to fillet, You need a very good filleting nice that is SHARP.. :cook2:

we found them okay, better than parrot or many other reef fish, typical cod texture, altho we had them on the bbq with kings and calamari, we still thawt not too bad!!
