Trip of firsts - cod opening
Technically not first cod trip since opening but im calling it that anyway for the report narrative. The first attempt at cod this season was last sunday on the yarra - 1.5hrs on the water which was marred by the downpour we got, seb + his mate joined and i reckon we would have been lucky to get 50 casts in between us.
Had saturday plans which fell though saturday morning so made the kneejerk call early morning to drive up to Central vic (Goulburn river) with the intention to do some recon and hopefully get a cod as well.
Arrived about 1pm in a location new to me, did the whole drive/get out and scope river/drive/repeat for about 1hr before settling on a spot. Fished slow and steady in peak cloudless skies and midday sun - not really comforted by this despite being awesome weather to be out. About the 3rd spot and 80 casts in i had a small cod smash my zerek 5" soft plastic. Steep and small bank + being by myself didnt equate to a great photo but here it is anyway. No measure as focus was on maintaining footing + release, but guesstimate is somewhere in the 30-40cm range. Nothing after this on my first stretch of river
Come 4pm did some driving and exploring in the area, which didnt end up with me finding or fishing. And having to take some annoying detours to get back on the water - all in all, i wasnt back onto the water until 6.30ish.
2nd run was another new stretch on the same system - plan was to work sub surface away from the car, then surface back to the car as the twilight hit. Nothing under the water and managed to get a baby cod on the surface around 7.30-8pm. It took a black savage gear bat of 7.5cm right at about 2ft from the bank, just as the lure was about to be pulled out and recast. Even worse photo (for same reasons as above + now low light) and no measure, but estimated as 24cm max going by the lure size.
Spent another hour casting for nothing, lost the lure to a snag and called it a day, getting back home around 12. Good adhoc day out, explored some new locations and got a couple firsts. The firsts are pretty small, but firsts none-the-less. Im in my 3rd season trying natives - first season was just a clueless write-off, 2nd was remediating 1st seasons mistakes and lessons - meaning 3rd season i *should* have a bit more of a clue and success which is so far happening!
List of firsts:
- cod for 19/20 season
- cod on lure out of goulburn
- cod on soft plastic
- cod on surface
- fish on new set up (ugly stick travel rod 664TRVM + 4k sienna)
Cheers, Chris

Another first for you
The 2nd cod, the one that you got on the surface, is a trout cod
