Some fishermen spend their entire lives striving for that perfect catch. Trip after trip dreaming of landing the big one that didn't get away.
Well two Department of Sustainability and Enviroment researchers from the Arthur Rylah Institute got close to perfection during a spot of electro-fishing in the Murray River recently.
ARI fish ecologists Mathew Jones and John mckenzie caught a 1.2 metre threatened Murray Cod.
They then watched on in amazement as the Cod coughed up a live and kicking 400-mm golden perch.
Dr Jones told the DSE"s internal web daily upgrade page that it was not unusual for researches to find a fish the size of the Murray Cod, but extremely rare to have it then cough up a live fish so large.
"Occasionally, we see a large Murray Cod coughing up a small dead fish, but this perch was more than a foot long and alive ,"Dr Lones said.
It was definately a first for both of us and we just looked at each other in dis belief. It must have been breakfast for the big cod.
"We put it in the live well and it recovered quickly. It was upright and swimming alongside other fish, so we tagged and released it along with the other fish we caught. The researches were working as a part of the Murray River Fishways Assessment program, which has a long-term goal of opening up 2225 kilometres of river between Goolwa barrages in South Australia and the Hume Dam, near Albury, to allow fish to migrate :fish7:
